Job Hunt Survivor is a 2D rogue-lite survival game where players battle the emotional and practical challenges of unemployment within a surreal, floating island that represents the character’s nightmare.
Waves of enemies embody real-world frustrations, including ATS systems, ghost jobs, rejections, and elusive “unicorn” job listings—alongside more hopeful encounters like receiving an interview or having an application accepted.
The game's concept was simple: a game where the players battle the worst aspects of the modern job search, as well as the manifestations of its impact on mental health.
I decided to give the character and their former partner gender-neutral names to allow for future expansion where I would allow the player to select their character's gender, and have female voiced lines.
The game has a story line that begins with the character being laid off, and follows their journey through their job search and their psychological state, ultimately succumbing to depression.
The narrative is told through three ways: journal entires, wave enemies, and the statues located around the map.
The journal entries display at the beginning of each wave and reveal the character's experience in this period.
The enemies begin as job postings that spawn the typical job search outcomes, and later, self-doubt.
The statues reveal some of the character's history, as well as insights into what keeps them motivated.
After initially establishing what the statues represent in Hunter's past, I wanted their thoughts to be mostly positive aspirations for the future; things that will motivate them to keep persisting in their job hunt.
Although I was the sole developer performing all roles on the project, I wanted to ensure that the narrative was easily integrated into the other phases, particuarly for the voiceover.
For this, I created a spreadsheet to serve as the source of truth, and to track the progress of the audio recording.
The text in the "Line" column served two purposes: as the script for VO, and the content for the subtitle bubbles with the line breaks.
